In July, 2017, an old friend (a 100 ft Norway Spruce) was taken down from my yard. I knew I had to honor it and wrote this commemoration for my Christmas card this year. I share it with all of you here who may have seen this beautiful tree and want to say farewell…..

Guardian stepping down to allow the sunshine in
Shadowing friend and foe, never wavering in your tall service
Spruce of Norway you were a point of reference for the lake traffic Fragrant and prolific in spruce cones – you will be missed. Your shade was a cooling part of my home —
The birds and squirrels made nests in your gigantic branches
100 feet high with a wide and healthy trunk, you will be missed.
To honor you I kept 26 cones to send to those who grew up beneath you
And cried when I told them you were coming down
I will send this memoriam along with a cone to decorate their Christmas trees
You will live on that way and we thank you.
